The call was made by Foreign Minister Taïb Fassi Fihri during the general debate of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly.
The candidacy is aimed at serving peace and stability and promoting solidarity and universal values, Fassi Fihri said.
He added that this candidacy reflects the Kingdom’s constitutional commitment and crowns a more than half a century’s experience on the ground, with the participation of more than 50,000 members of the Royal Armed Forces in peacekeeping operations across the world.
Moreover, as part of reinforcing this “partnership for peace” Morocco continues to endeavour for disarmament and the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, the minister said.
Fassi Fihri went on to say that the candidacy is also intended to enhance international solidarity, especially among developing countries within the framework of South-South cooperation.
Morocco is confident that “your support for this legitimate candidacy, which coincides with a particular regional juncture, will give Morocco’s presence within the Security Council a special dimension,” the minister told the member states.
