The current polisario leadership is “a mafia-minded dictatorship that has been self-serving since ever and which does not intend to change an iota,” coordinator of the Khatt Echahid Movement (line of the Martyr), Mahjoub Ould Saleck said.
In a statement to Mauritanian daily, Le Quotidien de Nouakchott, Ould Saleck described as “ridiculous” the re-election of Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz by 96.99% of votes during the 13th polisario congress. Such an election, he said, shows the obstinacy of a handful of polisario leaders, who perpetrate the suffering of the population held in the camps to enrich themselves.
Ould Saleck made it clear that the polisario’s congress does not meet the criteria of transparency and democracy, noting that the 750 delegates who took part in the vote were appointed by Ould Abdelaziz to serve him.
Ould Saleck also pointed to the fact that the electoral committee was composed of members who pledge allegiance to Ould Abdelaziz.
He said that the Sahara issue is out of the hands of the polisario and that only an understanding between Morocco and Algeria may lead to a consensual solution.
The Spain-based Ould Saleck, who founded Khatt Chahid in 2003, was in Mauritania to coordinate the Sahrawi opposition against the long-serving polisario leadership.
