It is not the first time that the remote echo of dissident voices in the Tindouf camps have risen in rebellion against the hegemony of the Polisario Front. The Saharawi people who have entrusted the Polisario to defend their cause are disgruntled over their leaders’ bad governance.
The daily Al Massae received a top secret document sealed by the General Directorate for the Protection of National Institutions working under the auspices of the Ministry of National Defense in the so called “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR)”. The leaked document reveals an acute discord among the Polisario Front’s leadership, as well as mounting discontent which has translated into demonstrations and protests in the Polisario camps.
The document, in the format of a letter, was sent by Mohammed Al Wali Akik, the General Director of the Protection of National Institutions that overseas all the military regions, to the national security apparatus and to the governmental institutions. The document, which was labeled “Top secret,” warned of a general uprising that seeks to topple the president of the SADR Mohammed Abdel Aziz who has been in office since 1976. The document hints that the tide of the Arab Spring has reached the shores of the virtual republic.
The letter, dated December 6th 2011, was sent a few days before the Polisario’s 13th Congress that was held from 14 to 22 December 2011 in Tifariti. Mr. Akik explicitly states in his letter, “In the course of preparation for the 13th Congress and taking into account the sensitive juncture and the demonstrations that are vigorously used by the enemy and some unpatriotic officials, we are urged to maximize our efforts to triumph over the hardships of this period.”
The separatist authorities have issued an order to deter any attempt to topple Mohammed Abdelaziz Al Merakshi. Mr. Akkik reiterates in his letter the necessity to urge voters to renew their allegiance to Al Merakshi “Our duty is to urge people to vote for the brother and the president and to harass all those who stand against him.”
The Moroccan security apparatus in Es Semara has been mobilized since last Sunday after the arrival of 24 separatists from Algeria in order to attend ceremonies organized following the closure of the Polisario’s 13th Congress in Tifariti. During the festivities, the separatists shouted anti-Moroccan slogans in the streets and called on Es Semara residents to put an end to what they labeled as “Moroccan colonialism.”
Morocco’s General Director of National Security received strict orders not to intervene and to avoid any altercations with the separatists.
Subsequent to the 13th Congress of the Polisario, 12 separatists living in the southern provinces and Casablanca won seats in different Polisario committees. These separatists who live in Moroccan territories are now members of the Polisario executive councils.
