Rabat – UNICEF has launched a compelling appeal highlighting the dire situation faced by children in the Gaza Strip.

“In war, it is children who suffer first and suffer most. The cost of this violence to children and their communities will be borne out for generations to come,” the UN humanitarian agency said in a statement today.

With thousands of children killed or injured and over 1.7 million people displaced, including half of them children, the region is experiencing unprecedented suffering.

The recent surge in violence has left families torn apart, homes destroyed, and essential services such as water, food, fuel, and medicine in short supply.

In the midst of vigorous protests against Israel’s brutal war on Gaza, attention has been drawn to the harrowing conditions facing Gazans, particularly in northern Gaza, where many survive on less than 250 calories a day.

The toll of the Israeli Occupation Forces’ campaign has been staggering, with over 33,100 Palestinians killed and more than 75,600 injured since October 7. In addition, Gazans have faced severe shortages of essential supplies, Oxfam reported.

Addressing the urgent situation during a press briefing this Friday at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the Secretary-General of the United Nations emphasized the pressing need for immediate action to prevent further loss of life.

Calling for a ceasefire, he stressed the need for all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and adhere to international humanitarian law.

“In the face of unprecedented suffering and devastation in Gaza, the time for action is now,” declared the Secretary-General. “We cannot afford to wait any longer while innocent lives hang in the balance.”

The UN chief expressed deep concern over the dire humanitarian situation, highlighting the urgent need for swift and unimpeded delivery of aid to alleviate the suffering of millions in Gaza.

Today’s appeal from UNICEF echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the critical need for life-saving support to reach the most vulnerable, especially children who are bearing the brunt of Israel’s murderous war on Gazans.
