Rabat – The Directorate of Competition, Prices, and Compensation, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Economy, has said that Morocco’s national markets have been well supplied without any shortage of basic products throughout the first weeks of Ramadan.
A press release from the watchdog body today announced that the Interministerial Commission responsible for monitoring supply, prices, and control operations held a meeting on Wednesday, reassuring that the supply of national markets remains abundant and varied during the first nine days of the holy month.
The press release noted that prices of food remained generally stable, with a “tendency to decrease for some products,” especially those experiencing increased demand like fruits, meat, and fish as well as vegetables.
Throughout the past few years, the surge in food prices has put an overwhelming burden on low and medium-income citizens, leading to widespread backlash against the government.
While there have been noticeable decreases in vegetable and fruit prices, other essential products like meat continue to remain expensive.
Red meat prices average over MAD 100 per kilogram in many butcheries across Morocco.
The prices monitoring committee, however, stressed that price decreases have been recorded for some vegetables, ranging between 2.5% and 8% compared to the beginning of Ramadan.
The directorate added that the average price of basic vegetables ranges between MAD 4 and MAD 7 per kilogram, while fruit prices decreased between 2% and 3%.
It also said that red meat prices, especially beef, experienced a slight decrease.
“The government continues to suspend custom duties on imports of cattle destined for slaughter in order to strengthen the national supply,” the statement added.
But it acknowledged that white meat experienced increases at the beginning of Ramadan.
The prices eventually recorded “significant” decreases exceeding 5%, with an average selling price of live poultry of AMD 20.50 per kilogram compared to MAD 22 per kilogram at the beginning of Ramadan, the statement concluded.
