New York – Colombians all around the world are outraged at the outcome of Miss Universe 2015, where Miss Colombia was announced as the winner for two minutes before the host said there was a mistake.
The Miss Universe pageant lived one of the worst moments in the history of the organization on Sunday night from Las Vegas, when host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced the winner as Miss Colombia instead of Miss Philippines.
A live audience and millions through FOX live watched when Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez celebrated her win just to have her dreams and those of Colombians shattered in front of the world. According to several South American reports, Colombians are not buying it. They do not believe it was an “honest mistake” as Harvey tweeted apologizing.
“They took away her crown,” social media users began posting at the end of the competition.
Colombia lost its third Miss Universe within a matter of seconds.
Thousands expressed their support for Miss Colombia and lashed out at the organization and Steve Harvey. #MissColombia and #MissUniverse are the country’s top trending topic.
“The entire country, and our family, was overcome with emotion,” Alvaro Arevalo, the Colombian runner-up’s cousin who admitted to be “a little shocked,” told Blu Radio in an interview Monday, according to Bogota’s AP.
According to the same source, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos gave a statement to Radio Nacional on Monday.
“I was watching Miss Universe with my family. We started a huge celebration when they said Colombia had won the Miss Universe title for the second straight year,” the president said.
“They put the crown on her head. The photos are there to prove it. To me, as a Colombian, she is still Miss Universe,” he added.
The controversial finale stirred uproar among Colombians and local media who try to find explanations for the unusual way in which Harvey ratified his mistake.
Some videos have tried to show evidence that he allegedly swapped cards to prove Miss Philippines won. Others want to know why the judges did not stand up to correct the mistake immediately.
“Mafias are everywhere. They stole the title,” Efrain Salinas, a doorman in a Bogota apartment building told Colombian media.
“After winning last year’s Miss Universe we’re a beauty pageant powerhouse and nobody wants us to win again,” he added as cited by AP.
Some believe that Donald Trump is still part owner of the organization and did it as payback to humiliate Colombians after Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega lashed out at him for his anti-immigration remarks.
Social media users have come up with memes to slam the host and videos that allegedly prove there was fraud in the finale.
Many Colombians believe it was a “scripted ending” to “rob their country” of its third Miss Universe crown. Others believe it was done on purpose and that Harvey agreed to be part of a move to increase the ratings of the show.
Donald Trump commented on the Miss Universe confusion on Monday morning by saying that he would make both women “co-winners,” reassuring that he sold the pageant.
