Rabat – The Arab Group at the UN has commended Morocco’s “sustained efforts” to defend the Palestinian cause.
Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud, Permanent representative of Jordan to the UN, made the statement on Monday during a meeting of the Security Council to discuss the latest developments in the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian territory experienced violent attacks from Israeli forces, who have launched over the past days a series of airstrikes that have claimed the lives of at least 40 people and injured more than 200 Palestinians.
Recalling the situation in Gaza, the Jordanian official expressed concerns regarding the lack of genuine discussions over a two-state solution as the basis to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Israel’s latest air raids on Gaza stirred uproar and international condemnation, with many countries, UN officials, and observers speaking out against the dire humanitarian situation Palestinians experience daily amid Israeli attacks.
Many countries expressed concerns about the situation, with Morocco stressing that the return of violence has caused avoidable human losses and untold material damage.
On Saturday last week, the Moroccan Foreign Affairs Ministry said: “The Kingdom of Morocco, whose sovereign his majesty King Mohammed VI chairs the Al-Quds Committee calls for avoiding further escalation and restoring calm so that the situation does not degenerate.”
The Moroccan ministry also warned against further tensions that could jeopardize any prospects for peace in the region and renewed Morocco’s principled support for the rights of the Palestinian people.
Echoing Morocco’s position, Jordan’s UN representative reiterated that the two-state solution is the only way to resolve the Israel-Palestine conflict and achieve a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
The Jordanian diplomat reirated Arab cuntries’ position regarding the palestinian cause, emphasizing that Palestinians deserve the right to enjoy full sovereignty over all of their coutnry’s territories that have been occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem.
Palestinians have the right to also benefit from their air and maritime space as well as the country’s resources and its borders with neighboring countries.
The Jordanian official concluded his statement by calling for an immediate international action to end the escalation of violence, saying that the catastrophic consequences of further tensions will affect the entire region.
The Arab group also commend Egypt’s efforts to secure a truce in Gaza, while extending greetings to both Qatar and the US for their role in restoring calm in the strip.
