King Mohammed VI has arrived in Marrakech to carry out field assessment of measures deployed as part of efforts to tackle the earthquake crisis.
The monarch’s visit is an extension of Morocco’s efforts to manage the repercussions caused by the earthquake that has killed at least 2,900 people since Friday.
According to the latest estimates from the Interior Ministry, over 5,500 people have sustained injuries of varying severity in the aftermath of the tragic earthquake.
The royal visit comes as Moroccans from all backgrounds and walks of life continue to mobilize to support relief efforts, extending helping hands to all people affected by the earthquake — particularly those who are living in isolated and remote areas.
On Saturday, King Mohammed VI declared a three-day mourning, urging the government to speed up efforts to help the affected victims.
The King’s instructions include urgent measures, including the implementation of field hospitals, rehabilitation of destroyed houses, as well as the creation of a special bank account by the Treasury and Bank Al Maghrib to receive contributions of citizens as well as private and public institutions who wish to help.
Morocco has deployed several measures since Saturday morning to respond to the alarming situation, including distribution of food, drinking water, blankets as well as tents to shelter people who have lost their homes to the earthquake.
As the King tours Marrakech and surrounding regions, rescue operations are ongoing to help people affected by the earthquake as auxiliary forces, civil protection, and the army are using traditional and highly advanced logistics to distribute aid.
These nationwide efforts have also been joined by volunteers who have traveled to the North African kingdom from different countries, including Qatar, UAE, Spain, and the UK to take part in ongoing operations to rescue the victims.
Millions of Moroccans are also extending solidarity with the victims, with each city mobilizing volunteers and NGOs to collect aid that will be transported to the victims.
Estimates from the World Health Organization indicated that the earthquake has affected at least 300,000 people across the country.
As many as children have been affected by the tragic earthquake UNICEF said on Monday, but the UN body noted that there are still no estimates of the exact number of children who have died or sustained injuries in the devastating tremor .
The Al Haouz region continues to be the top affected region in terms of deaths, which reached more than 1,400 victims.
