Rabat – The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a branch of Iran’s military, has announced that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed by a “short-range projectile with a warhead of about 7kg” that caused a severe explosion outside his room.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the IRGC said investigations revealed that the projectile, carrying explosive materials, was launched from outside the guests residence in Tehran.
The IRGC attributes the assassination to the “Zionist regime,” with backing from the “criminal government of the US.”
The statement condemned the attack as a deliberate act of aggression and promised a “severe” response from Tehran, though it did not specify the timing or nature of this retaliation.
Haniyeh and his bodyguard were killed earlier this week in Tehran while attending the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s newly elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian.
His funeral took place yesterday at a mosque in Qatar with the presence of several foreign officials, including Turkiye’s Vice-President Cevdet Yilmaz and Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
The funeral was also attended by prominent figures from both Hamas and their Palestinian rivals Fatah, as well as members of Haniyeh’s family.
The late Hamas leader was laid to rest at a cemetery in Lusail, a city north of Doha. His assassination occurred during a period of heightened tension and has sparked widespread international reaction.
The killing has prompted global protests and strong condemnations. In Morocco, thousands gathered in Rabat on Saturday to denounce Haniyeh’s assassination and Israeli aggression in Gaza.
