Marrakech – In a recent article published by the renowned international design magazine Architectural Digest (AD), Chefchaouen, the blue northern Moroccan mountain town, was ranked as the 8th most beautiful city in the world.

The article, which lists the 20 most beautiful cities in the world according to the magazine, was published on July 22, 2024, and highlighted some of the most spectacular places from around the globe.

The ranking was based on several criteria, including architecture, cultural treasures, historical relevance, and natural appeal.

AD emphasized that the best cities offer something unique that cannot be found anywhere else, and that the list aimed to include destinations from various parts of the world that possess these qualities.

Regarding Chefchaouen, AD wrote, “Few cities can inspire a traveler to book a trip based on a single photo, but Chefchaouen, the northern Morocco mountain town bathed in blue, is one of those places.”

The article explained the reason behind the city’s signature blue color, stating, “In the 15th century, Jewish refugees fleeing the Spanish Inquisition painted the buildings blue as a reminder of the heavens and God’s power above. In the subsequent centuries, residents kept up the tradition.”

The list also included other striking cities such as Adelaide, Australia; Tallinn, Estonia; and Portsmouth, Dominica, which took the top three spots, respectively.

America’s New York City also made the list, praised for its iconic skyline and extensive green spaces.

This is not the first time Chefchaouen has been recognized by AD for its beauty.

In July 2023, the magazine published another article titled “7 Striking Monochromatic Cities Around the World,” in which Chefchaouen was featured as the third most impressive single-toned town.

The article highlighted the city’s commitment to its vibrant blue color, which covers everything from the façades lining the streets to the stairs winding through its alleyways.
