Rabat – In one of the deadliest attacks since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza, more than 100 people were killed when Israeli forces bombed the al-Tabin School in Gaza City on Saturday morning, where hundreds of displaced Palestinians had sought refuge.
Local doctors are struggling to cope with the influx of casualties. Many of the victims were brought to hospitals “in pieces,” with bodies so badly damaged that 15 remain unidentifiable, spokesman for Gaza’s civil defense Mahmoud Basal told Al Jazeera.
“The school area is strewn with dead bodies and body parts … Medical teams stand helpless before this horrific scene,” he added.
The early morning strike has drawn widespread international condemnation and further inflamed tensions in the besieged territory.
Jordan’s Foreign Ministry has described the attack as a “flagrant violation of international law,” stressing the need for a decisive international response to restrain Israeli aggression.
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry also condemned the strike, accusing Israel of showing “no political will” to end the war and repeatedly committing “large-scale crimes” against civilians.
Meanwhile, Hamas labeled the attack part of an “extermination campaign” against Palestinians. The group dismissed Israel’s claims that the school was being used as a Hamas command center as baseless excuses to target civilians.
The international community has been urged to take action as mediators from Qatar, Egypt, and the United States push for renewed ceasefire talks.
The bombing of the al-Tabin School is the latest in a series of attacks on educational institutions in Gaza. In recent days, Israeli forces have targeted multiple schools across the enclave, resulting in the deaths of dozens of civilians.
