Javier Colomina, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighborhood, said today in Rabat that Morocco remains an “indispensable player” in security cooperation.

Describing Morocco as a “very important partner” for the Atlantic Alliance, the NATO official stressed the country’s counter-terrorism efforts during a meeting with Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita.

The two officials also discussed the opportunities and ways to deepen political, civil, and military cooperation between Morocco and NATO.

The visit comes as NATO aims to showcase its readiness to further explore common venues for cooperation to address common concerns such as terrorism and cybercrimes, while further strengthening mechanisms to secure strengthened maritime security.

This is not the first time that a NATO official has stressed the importance of partnership with Morocco.

Admiral Rob Bauer, Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, recently commended Morocco’s dedication to social, political, and economic reforms while emphasizing the importance of  Morocco’s active participation in NATO exercises, sharing expertise in counterterrorism, irregular  immigration control, and maritime security.

“NATO is proud to count Morocco among its partners,” Admiral Bauer said this past April during a visit to Morocco.

In 2004, the US named Morocco as a non-NATO Ally, recognizing the country;s strong partnership addressing challenges like counterterrorism.

The designation also recognizes Morocco’s close cooperation with US law enforcement to safeguard both countries security interests.
