Rabat – The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) has appointed Adam Elhiraika as the new Director of its Subregional Office for North Africa (SRO-NA), based in Rabat, Morocco.

Elhiraika, a seasoned macroeconomist with a focus on development issues, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He has held senior positions at the ECA for over a decade, leading its Macroeconomic Policy and Macroeconomics and Governance Divisions.

During this time, he conducted groundbreaking research in areas such as macroeconomic policy, development planning, industrialization, and economic governance.

Prior to his appointment at the ECA, Elhiraika served as Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Sudan, where he applied his expertise to address the country’s economic challenges.

He has also held academic positions at several universities, including the University of Glasgow, where he earned a PhD in Economics.

As director of the SRO-NA, Elhiraika will oversee the ECA’s efforts to support sustainable development and job creation in the North African region.

His responsibilities will include strengthening the capacity of member states to implement national policies, promoting regional integration, and improving macroeconomic policies.

The SRO-NA covers seven countries: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Sudan, and Tunisia. The office plays a crucial role in promoting economic growth, reducing poverty, and improving the lives of people in the region.

Elhiraika’s appointment comes at a critical time for North Africa, as the region faces a number of challenges, including economic instability, political unrest, and climate change.

His expertise and leadership has promise to be invaluable in helping the ECA to address these challenges and promote sustainable development in the region.
