Morocco’s fertilizer giant OCP and low carb energy group ENGIE have signed a partnership aimed at accelerating the Moroccan group’s transition.

The signing of the partnership took place on Monday between OCP CEO Mostafa Terrab and CEO of ENGIE Catherine MacGregor.

The signing was part of the ceremony held in Rabat as part of France President State visit to Morocco.

The deal, a joint development agreement, reflects the two groups’ commitment in launching several renewable energy projects, energy storage, green hydrogen and ammonia in addition to electrical infrastructure and sustainable desalination.

The agreement aims to co-develop and manage four large scale industrial projects, including the development  of electricity production capacity from renewable  sources coupled with storage ambitions to ensure the flexibility of OCP’s energy network.

It also seeks the creation of intra-site electrical infrastructures linked to new renewable energy sources.

The agreement seeks to also develop green ammonia production capacity, with a concurrent study of the feasibility of producing other green hydrogen derivatives.

OCP and ENGIE also aspire to develop a desalination capacity for agricultural use in regions where the Moroccan fertilizer group operaties. The agreement further includes the deployment of a research and innovation agenda to enhance the competitiveness of this collaboration and create innovative opportunities.

“This partnership between ENGIE and OCP addresses the energy and environmental challenges faced by OCP and aligns with its decarbonisation strategy as well as Morocco’s significant ambitions for energy transition,” a statement from OCP.

Commenting on the agreement, Terrab said the partnership aims to reflect the group’s commitment to sustainable growth, focused on energy innovation and decarbonization.

“Through this strategic alliance, we will continue to enhance the international competitiveness of OCP in renewable energies while contributing to a sustainable future for generations to come,”he said.

ENGIE CEO MacGregor also commented on the partnership with OCP, saying it embodies a shared vision for energy transition, with an integrated and diversified approach to technological solutions.

“Together we will contribute to the development of low-carbon energy solutions while strengthening the Moroccan industrial ecosystem,” ENIE CEO added, noting that the collaboration will position the two groups as key players in the decarbonization of Morocco and enhance ENGIE’s presence in Morocco
