Rabat – Head of the Moroccan government Aziz Akhannouch announced on Thursday that the government is committed to implementing King Mohammed VI’s vision for the Moroccan diaspora, as outlined in his Green March anniversary speech on Wednesday.
The monarch called for revisiting and restructuring institutions that manage the affairs of Moroccans living abroad to reinforce their relationship with their homeland.
Speaking at the weekly government council today, Akhannouch said that an initial meeting with relevant ministries is scheduled for later in the day to discuss the institutional and legal frameworks needed to carry out the King’s directives efficiently.
“I have decided that the mechanisms used in managing the affairs of Moroccans residing abroad should be revisited,” the King said in his speech yesterday.
He then announced plans to create two main bodies; the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad, which will provide strategic guidance and representation, and the Mohammadia Foundation for Moroccans Residing Abroad, which will focus on executing public policy and consolidating efforts across various stakeholders.
The monarch spoke on the need to improve the diaspora’s access to administrative, cultural, and economic resources. He called for the mobilization of skilled Moroccan professionals abroad and highlighted the importance of increasing diaspora investment in the country, stating that the current 10% contribution to private investment is insufficient.
King Mohammed VI stated that supporting the Moroccan diaspora is crucial because they play an essential role in defending Morocco’s sovereignty, promoting its international interests, and contributing to national development.
He praised their patriotism and dedication to Morocco’s “sacred, incontrovertible values,” recognizing them as ambassadors who strengthen the country’s global presence and reputation.
