Rabat – Adam Masina is back with Morocco’s national team after Walid Regragui called him up for two big AFCON qualifiers against Gabon and Lesotho on 15 and 18 November.

Masina hasn’t played for Morocco since June 2022. During that time, was a key player under the former coach, Vahid Halilhodzic, with 16 appearances. Now, after two years away, he returns to the squad following a strong start of the season with Serie A’s Torino as a left central defender in a three-at-the-back lineup.

However, there might be some tactical changes.

This time Regragui might use the 189-centimeter defender in central defense instead of left back where he played most of the time in the national team, since Morocco already has options there, including Noussair Mazraoui, and the return of Yahia Attiat-Allah, and Adam Aznou.

The 30-year-old is having a strong season in Italy. He’s started in 10 games for Torino, scored two league goals, and even netted in the Coppa Italia.

In addition to his international feats, Masina’s experience playing at home will be key. He played all matches for Morocco in the disappointing 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, and knows how to handle pressure in a demanding environment.

Masina’s call-up is more than just filling a gap.

Regragui is expected to feature Masina alongside Nayef Aguerd — if fully fit — create a pairing able to hold a high defensive line, build plays from the back, and track back fast attackers. His participation  dds skill, experience, and depth to Morocco’s defense.

Masina was born in Khouribga, Morocco in 1994 but grew up in Italy. He started his career in Bologna’s youth system and moved up to the senior team in 2013. Masina played five seasons for Bologna before joining Watford for a reported £3.5 million transfer fee. At Watford, he made 80 appearances and became a key player.

In 2022, he moved back to Italy to play for Udinese.

Two years later in 2024, he joined Torino where he has had a strong season. Masina first played for Italy under-21s but chose to play for Morocco in 2021. Since then, he’s earned 16 caps and is known for his solid defense.
