Rabat – Morocco’s national football team won 5-1 against Gabon in their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 (AFCON) qualifier today, securing another crucial three points.

Tonight’s victory keeps Morocco at the top of Group B with a total of 15 points, maintaining their lead in the group.

The match started with Gabon taking an early lead in the 4th minute thanks to a goal from Denis Bouanga. However, Morocco quickly found their rhythm.

In the 17th minute, Jamal Harkass scored to equalize, making it 1-1. Just three minutes later, Brahim Diaz put Morocco ahead with a stunning goal in the 20th minute. Diaz wasn’t done yet, as he scored again in the 23rd minute, giving the Atlas Lions a solid 3-1 lead.

In the 81st minute, Youssef En-Nesyri added a fourth goal for the Moroccan squad, with Ismail Saibari scoring the team’s fifth nine minutes later and sealing their 4-1 win.

Before the game, Morocco’s head coach Walid Regragui spoke about the importance of the match. However, he said that it was not just about qualifying but also about maintaining high standards.

“This will not be a friendly game just because Gabon has secured their qualification. We are representing a nation ranked 13th globally and 4th in Africa, and our goal is always to win,” he said

Despite Morocco already being qualified for AFCON 2025 as hosts, Regragui emphasized that the team was committed to staying sharp and continuing their good form.

Tonight’s result maintained Gabon’s position in second place in Group B with seven points, while Lesotho and the Central African Republic remained in third and fourth place, respectively.
