Rabat – Egypt has officially entered the competition for the position of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, joining Morocco and Algeria in the diplomatic race. This role, reserved for North Africa, will be decided during the AU’s upcoming ordinary summit in February 2025.
Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement today on the launch of the campaign Hanan Morsy, the country’s candidate for the role in Addis Ababa
On Wednesday, Egypt’s Permanent Mission to the AU in Addis Ababa held an event to promote Morsy as its candidate for the position. The gathering included members of diplomatic missions, representatives from the AU Commission, and various African think tanks and research centers.
The event featured a presentation on the Egyptian candidate’s expertise in economic and developmental fields, her role in mobilizing resources, and her support for the priorities of the African Union Agenda 2063 at both regional and international levels, added the statement.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty shared a recorded message during the event, expressing confidence in Morsy’s qualifications and her ability to contribute to reforms within the AU Commission.
Morsy will face competition from Morocco’s Latifa Akherbach, who currently heads Morocco’s High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HACA), and Algeria’s Selma Malika Haddadi, an ambassador to Ethiopia and a former director of African affairs at Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Moroccan contender has an impressive career spanning journalism, government roles, and international missions. She previously served as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Morocco’s Ambassador to Bulgaria and Tunisia.
Morocco announced its candidacy for the position on August 3, while Algeria declared its intentions earlier, on July 31.
