Rabat – Morocco is a “major investment destination” for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), said Odile Renaud-Basso, the bank’s president, during the Africa Investment Forum (AIF) held in Rabat.
Renaud-Basso said that the EBRD has already invested over €400 million in Morocco this year in an interview with MAP. Since 2012, total investments have reached nearly €5 billion, with 70% directed toward the private sector. She further described the relationship between Morocco and the EBRD as “excellent.”
The EBRD recently outlined its new strategy for Morocco for the 2024-2029 period. This strategy focuses on several main priorities, including supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) directly, as well as through partnerships with Moroccan banks.
The strategy also outlines plans for the EBRD to fund renewable energy projects to help Morocco achieve its green energy goals. Additionally it plans to support programs for young and female entrepreneurs, improving women’s access to the job market and helping them attain leadership positions in businesses.
Moroccan Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch met with Renaud-Basso today on the sidelines of the event to discuss key development projects under King Mohammed VI’s leadership. Minister of Economy and Finance Nadia Fettah also attended the meeting.
The officials discussed Morocco’s efforts in green economy initiatives, social cohesion, and reducing regional inequalities. Akhannouch commended the EBRD’s role in supporting Morocco’s infrastructure projects and energy transition. Both parties said it is important to align the EBRD’s new strategy with Morocco’s priorities, especially in green economy projects.
Renaud-Basso said that the EBRD’s investments in Morocco this year focused on energy transition, carbon-neutral sectors, women’s empowerment, and digitalization. She noted that these priorities align with Morocco’s development goals.
Since becoming an EBRD member in 2012, Morocco has benefited from €4.74 billion in investments, with 77% directed toward the private sector.
The Africa Investment Forum brought together key players from across the continent to finance and implement development projects. Renaud-Basso acknowledged Morocco’s leadership in hosting the event, which runs from December 4–6.
