Rabat – Russia seeks to supply Morocco with one million tonnes of wheat this season, Russian reports indicated on Monday.
The country especially also aims to increase supplies to Morocco to 1.5 million tonnes in the future, a Moscow Times report quoted the head of the Russian Union of Exporters and Producers of Grains as saying.
Russia’s wheat exports to Morocco have so far amounted to 650,000 million tonnes since the start of the 2024-2025 season, making the North African country one of the top 10 buyers of Russian wheat.
In recent years, Morocco has shown a noticeable increase in interest in Russia’s wheat exports. According to official estimates, this trend is largely driven by the North African kingdom’s ongoing struggles with drought and dry seasons over the past six years.
The challenging weather conditions put pressure on Morocco’s domestic wheat productions, prompting the country to diversify its supplies to ensure a stable supply of grain.
Russia has noticeably emerged as a key player, with Moscow and Rabat signing last week a memorandum of agreement that formalizes the arrangements made between Russian grain exports and Moroccan grain traders.
This deal came after Morocco and Russia had consistently shown a strong mutual interest in boosting bilateral ties and cooperation across different sectors.
The two countries maintained a robust exchange of visits and dialogue to boost their ties, with a view to expanding collaboration in areas such as agriculture and fisheries.
In November, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita as part of the Ministerial Conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum. The two top diplomats discussed in particular the urgency of strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.
