Rabat – Morocco’s economic hub, Casablanca, has officially joined the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, becoming the first city in North Africa and the 14th in Africa to become part of this global network.
The Casablanca Municipality announced in a statement its membership in the C40, which brings together about 100 cities worldwide to fight against climate change and build sustainable futures.
The decision was approved last November during a C40 Steering Committee meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Casablanca’s membership will officially begin in January 2025.
The municipality’s statement noted that this marks a significant milestone for the city as it commits to addressing climate change challenges. By joining C40, Casablanca will represent North Africa and strengthen Africa’s voice in global efforts to tackle climate issues, the municipality added.
Nabila Rmili, President of the Casablanca Municipal Council, said: “Joining the network reflects our strong will to make Casablanca a green, smart, and inclusive city.”

“As the first city in the Maghreb to join this global network, we aim to learn from other cities and share our experiences in dealing with climate challenges,” she added.
The municipality said that Casablanca has already made strides in sustainability, such as expanding green spaces, introducing smart transportation systems, managing water resources efficiently, and improving its ability to adapt to climate changes.
It hopes that being part of the C40 network will give Casablanca access to support in integrating climate goals into urban planning and the opportunity to exchange best practices with other member cities.
C40 represents over 700 million people and accounts for a quarter of the global economy. It includes leading cities worldwide that take bold steps to combat climate change.
The municipality sees Casablanca’s membership in this group as another step forward in its journey toward a greener and more sustainable future.
