Rabat – Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, has announced that Morocco will soon launch 5G internet service as part of preparations to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
The move reflects a broader strategy of boosting the country’s digital infrastructure ahead of these major sporting events.
Speaking during a session at the House of Representatives, Seghrouchni outlined plans to extend 5G coverage to 25% of the population by 2026, with a target of reaching 70% by 2030.
Cities selected to host World Cup matches will receive comprehensive 5G coverage, ensuring high-speed connectivity for both residents and visitors during the tournament.
In addition to the 5G rollout, Seghrouchni announced that the government is working to connect 6,300 public administrative sites to fiber-optic internet by 2026.
By 2030, the initiative will extend to 5.6 million homes, further expanding access to high-quality digital services.

The minister also noted that these efforts are integral to the development of Morocco’s telecommunications sector.
The government is actively supporting telecommunications providers through investment agreements, with more than MAD 8.4 billion invested in 2023 alone to accelerate the country’s digital transformation.
This investment will contribute to modernizing infrastructure and facilitating the digital transition in preparation for the upcoming international events.
As Morocco gears up to host the 2025 AFCON and co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, major investments are being mobilized to ensure the country’s readiness for these major sporting events.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) recently announced a $685 million (MAD 7.04 billion) financing package to enhance Morocco’s railway and airport infrastructure.
During a visit to Rabat, AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina noted that the investment aims to strengthen Morocco’s infrastructure and boost its competitiveness on the global stage.
Following discussions with Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, Adesina noted the importance of these upgrades in supporting the country’s ability to successfully host the World Cup.
