Rabat — The prize money for the Total Energies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 has been given a hefty boost, with CAF confirming that the winners will now pocket a total MAD 36.8 million ($3.5m) cash prize.
“We are excited about the upcoming Total Energies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024 and have significantly increased the Prize Money of the Winner,” said CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
This is a staggering 75 percent increase from the last edition. At the 2023 CHAN, which was hosted by Algeria, winners took home just MAD 2.6 million ($260,000) from a total pool of MAD 10.3 million ($1m).
CAF has yet to disclose how much runners-up and other teams will earn. However, in the previous competition, runners-up claimed MAD 1.04 million ($104,000). Teams finishing third and fourth each got MAD 650,000 ($65,000), while quarter finalists received MAD 520,000 ($52,000).
The tournament has grown in commercial value, according to CAF. Officials believe the larger prize will spur competition and promote football development across Africa.
The CHAN is held every two years and features just players from their domestic leagues.
This year, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda co-host the tournament, and the draw is set for January 15 in Nairobi. Matches will take place between February 1–28.
The 16 teams in the mix include Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, and Nigeria. Others are Zambia, Angola, DR Congo, and hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
