Rabat — Congressman Joe Wilson is part of a group of US representatives endorsing tightening bilateral ties between Rabat and Washington.
On Wednesday, Wilson recalled his appeal during a public session of Congress, where he also cited the US’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
During his address, Wilson shared concerns about Russia’s position over the Western Sahra dispute.
“War criminal Putin, Iran, and Cuba are actively destabilizing West Africa by supporting the Polisario Front, a threat to the Kingdom of Morocco,” he said, recalling Morocco’s strategic importance as a long-standing ally to the US,” Wilson said.
“President Donald Trump stood with Morocco, recognizing Western Sahara as Moroccan. I appreciate chairing the US-Morocco Caucus,” the Congressman continued.
He also recalled the recent diplomatic provocation when Algeria hosted terrorist-designated Kurdish separatists to meet with Polisario militia in Tindouf.
The US politician said that the notorious PKK and YPG visited the camps, undermining US’ NATO ally, Turkiye.
Algeria attempted to appease the situation by denying that the visit was under its invitation.
Iran and Morocco also experienced a political crisis in 2018, when Rabat severed relations with Tehran.
Morocco’s decision came after officials said they presented well-documented evidence of collusion between the Polisario and Iranian proxy Hezbollah.
Iran has been denying any collusion, rejecting Rabat’s accusations that Hezbollah provided military training to the separatist group.
However, recent reports have been signaling potential amendments in bilateral ties between Morocco and Iran.
Russia, Algeria’s strong ally, pledged to help Morocco tackle the Western Sahara dispute.
“Morocco is a friendly country. We have good plans and we are helping Moroccans solve problems that fall under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ jurisdiction, primarily the issue of Western Sahara,” Russian Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov said.
But he publicly criticized the US, taking issue with Washington’s decision to recongize Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.
“The Trump administration, when Trump was first in the White House, simply issued a decree stating that Western Sahara is part of Morocco,” said the top Russian diplomat, adding that “issues should not be resolved unilaterally.”
