Rabat – Donald Trump took the oath of office for a second term on Monday, becoming the first US president since the 19th century to return to the White House after losing reelection.

Trump was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts inside the Capitol, joined by Vice President JD Vance in a ceremony that symbolized his political resilience and defiance of convention.

Trump, with his right hand raised, solemnly pledged: “I swear to faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States,” before Chief Justice Roberts.

Due to the freezing weather, the ceremony was held indoors for the first time in four decades, with heightened security throughout the event.

Former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Trump defeated in November, attended alongside ex-presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.

Trump’s inaugural speech focused heavily on immigration, declaring a national emergency at the southern border as one of his first executive actions.

He announced plans to halt illegal crossings, return millions of undocumented immigrants, and end birthright citizenship, though some of these measures may face legal hurdles.

Some view Trump’s second term as a rebuke of the political establishment, while others raised concerns about his polarizing leadership.

Tech moguls Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg were prominently seated, signaling potential alliances with Trump’s administration.

With his swearing-in complete, Trump’s historic return cements his position as a political outlier determined to reshape the nation in his image, setting the stage for a contentious second term.
