Doha – Morocco has recently acquired the Chinese-made TB-001K drone, known as the “Twin-Tailed Scorpion,” as part of the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military capabilities and diversify its defense suppliers.
The acquisition comes as Morocco, ranked 59th in global military power according to the Global Firepower Institute, continues to strengthen its aerial defense capabilities through partnerships with various international suppliers.
Morocco’s drone fleet has proven to be a formidable force in military operations across the Sahara, relentlessly targeting and neutralizing separatist Polisario Front infiltrations, and ensuring an unyielding grip over the buffer zones.
The TB-001K, manufactured by Sichuan Tengden, stands out for its impressive specifications and operational capabilities.
The drone can carry up to 1.5 tons of munitions and boasts an exceptional range of 8,000 kilometers with a continuous flight endurance of 40 hours.
Capable of operating at altitudes up to 10,000 meters, the aerial technology serves both reconnaissance and attack missions.
The unit price is approximately 2 million Chinese yuan, or around $280,000.
Constructed primarily from lightweight composite materials, the TB-001K features enhanced short takeoff capabilities and superior high-altitude performance.
Its distinctive dual-engine and twin-tail configuration provides increased stability and precision during operations.
The drone represents a significant technological advancement in Morocco’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fleet.
This acquisition fits into the wider framework of defense collaboration between Morocco and China.
The Royal Armed Forces have previously deployed Chinese-made Wing Loong 2 drones in the Sahara, following their initial procurement of Chinese drones in 2015 during King Mohammed VI’s visit to China.
The ongoing relationship has seen Morocco acquire various Chinese defense systems, including the Sky Dragon 50 long-range air defense system, AR2 multiple rocket launchers, and HJ-9A anti-tank missile systems.
Morocco’s military modernization efforts extend beyond drones. The country is reportedly in advanced discussions with Hongdu Aviation Industry Corporation (HAIC) regarding the potential acquisition of L-15 Falcon fighter aircraft to replace its aging fleet of Franco-German Alpha jets.
The L-15 Falcon, which has been exported to countries including Zambia and the United Arab Emirates, offers advanced features such as supersonic capability, modern avionics, and enhanced payload capacity.
According to the latest Global Firepower ranking, Morocco maintains a substantial military force of 395,800 personnel, including 195,800 active service members, 150,000 reservists, and 50,000 paramilitary forces.
The country’s air force operates a fleet of 260 military aircraft, including 83 combat aircraft and 78 helicopters, while the army possesses 903 battle tanks and 7,877 vehicles.
Morocco’s current military budget stands at $13.4 billion.
The latest purchase reflects the North African country’s strategic approach to reducing dependence on traditional Western suppliers while maintaining a diverse array of defense partnerships.
Morocco’s recent purchase of Turkish-made Akıncı drones from Baykar, following its 2021 acquisition of Bayraktar TB2 drones, further illustrates this diversification.
