Rabat – Morocco is determined to continue boosting tourism and trade with global partners, including India.
The Hindu Business Line reported on Monday that the North African country is seeking direct air connectivity with India and talks are already ongoing to discuss the launch of the air routes between carriers from the two countries.
The news outlet also quoted Morocco’s ambassador to India Mohamed Maliki, who confirmed the news, recalling Morocco’s tourism appeal, including its e-visa system.
“Morocco is getting popular among Indian tourists and the e-visa has turned out to be a game-changer,” Maliki told the news outlet on the sidelines of a travel show held in Mumbai.
He also talked about the growing ties between the two countries, as well as with China, asserting that Morocco focuses on the development of ties with all its partners.
In January, Morocco’s Ministry of Tourism released data bringing the positive news that the country’s tourism sector exceeded its tourism target.
In 2024, Morocco received 17.4 million visitors, representing a 20% increase compared to 2023.
Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) flocked into the country during the summer season in record-breaking numbers.
“The exceptional performance is the result of targeted investments by our government in this vital sector for our country’s economy, as well as the constant mobilization of industry professionals,” Minister of Tourism Fatim-Zahra Ammor said in January.
She congratulated all public and private stakeholders who contributed to the success.
Last year, Morocco’s airport handled around 32 million passengers. Forecasts suggest that air traffic may reach as high as 60 million passengers by 2030, when Morocco is set to co-host the 2030 World Cup. By 2035, Morocco’s airports are set to handle over 90 million arrivals.
Moroccan tourism professionals are satisfied with the growing trend in the industry.
Several international reports have cited Morocco’s emergence as a key player in the sector, including how the country is becoming a top-choice tourism destination and outpacing other markets.
In December, RFI said Morocco is set to surpass Egypt as the “most visited destination” in the region, citing the country’s cultural diversity and political stability.
