Rabat – In partnership with Morocco, Egypt will establish a regional biomanufacturing hub for North Africa.
On Saturday, Egyptian State Information Service reported that Egypt secured support to establish the regional hub with the support of Morocco.
The approval reportedly came after Cairo received support from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
“The selection of Egypt as the headquarters for the Regional Center for Capacity Building in Biomanufacturing (RCCN), in partnership with Morocco, follows the approval of Egypt’s proposal,” the news agency said.
The Unified Procurement Authority, under the Egyptian Vaccine Manufacturers Alliance, submitted the bid.
Egyptian Minister of Higher Education, Ayman Ashour, was quoted as saying that Egypt’s selection is a commitment to advancing pharmaceutical manufacturing, including vaccine production.
Morocco also has expertise in the field, especially after COVID-19‘s emergence in 2020. Many officials from Africa CDC commended Morocco’s proactive approach and efforts to battle the pandemic.
Nkengason, the Deputy Director for Global Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has lauded Morocco’s vaccine manufacturing during the pandemic, noting that the approach will contribute to fighting COVID-19 not only in the North African country but at a continental level.
He also conveyed CDC Africa’s support for all of Morocco’s efforts and initiatives to tackle the pandemic and lauded the country’s donations granted to about 20 African countries to help them tackle the health crisis.
In 2022, Morocco inaugurated the construction of the COVID-19 vaccine manufacturing plant in partnership with Recipharm.
The country’s goal is to produce more than 2 billion doses of the COVID vaccine by 2025.
Morocco also supports Africa’s healthcare development through its commitment to support Africa CDC’s efforts to achieve their goal of producing 60% of Africa’s total vaccine demand locally on the continent by 2040.
