Fez — Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, recovered Monday morning after a significant outage left tens of thousands of users unable to access the app and desktop site.

User reports on outage-tracking website Downdetector surged shortly after 8am Eastern Time, climbing from fewer than 20 reports to more than 40,000 within 30 minutes. By approximately 9:30 a.m., reports had dropped sharply, indicating that service had largely been restored.

The disruption affected both mobile and desktop versions of X. Roughly half of user complaints cited problems with the mobile application, while others reported difficulty loading timelines or accessing the website entirely.

No immediate explanation

X did not immediately respond to media requests for comment regarding the cause of the outage. The platform’s developer status page indicated that “all systems are operational” during much of the reported disruption, despite widespread user complaints.

Users returned to the platform shortly after service resumed, with many posting about the brief interruption and sharing screenshots of error messages encountered earlier in the morning.

The outage occurred during peak weekday morning usage hours in the United States, when many users rely on the platform for news updates, professional communication, and social engagement.

Part of a pattern

Monday’s incident follows other disruptions affecting X in recent months. The platform experienced a brief outage in January that impacted thousands of users. Last year, a wave of outages affected tens of thousands globally, with owner Elon Musk attributing the issue at the time to a “massive cyberattack,” claiming IP addresses linked to Ukraine were involved.

Since acquiring the platform in 2022 and rebranding it from Twitter to X, Musk has overseen major structural and operational changes, including staffing reductions and expanded features such as integrated artificial intelligence tools and monetization systems.

While Monday’s outage appeared to be resolved relatively quickly, repeated service disruptions have drawn attention to the platform’s technical resilience and infrastructure stability.
