Rabat – Morocco is gearing up for the 2030 FIFA World Cup with an ambitious plan to boost infrastructure in 35 cities, Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, announced on Tuesday.
Speaking during a parliamentary session at the House of Councillors, Baraka noted the global tournament’s transformative potential and described it as a turning point for Morocco’s development.
Breaking away from the standard approach of focusing solely on host cities, the minister underlined Morocco’s commitment to a more inclusive strategy. “This event is an opportunity to modernize infrastructure across the country, ensuring that smaller cities also benefit from the momentum,” he said.
A key aspect of the plan focuses on upgrading road networks to ease congestion in primary host cities while boosting links to neighboring towns that will serve as supporting hubs, including those hosting team training sessions.
Morocco’s 2030 World Cup preparations encompass a wide array of projects aimed at delivering lasting improvements to infrastructure and connectivity. These include highway upgrades, the expansion of access roads, and the construction of modern facilities.
Among the standout initiatives is the Grand Stade Hassan II in Benslimane, a state-of-the-art stadium vying to host the World Cup opening and final, and the Rabat-Casablanca continental highway, expected to be completed by 2029, which will bolster regional transportation.
With a detailed roadmap in place, the country seeks to leverage this global event to deliver infrastructure and technological advancements with benefits extending well beyond the competition.
Beyond road infrastructure, Morocco is also prioritizing digital transformation as part of its World Cup and AFCON 2025 preparations. Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, announced plans to roll out 5G internet service, looking to cover 25% of the population by 2026 and expand to 70% by 2030.
Cities hosting World Cup matches will receive comprehensive 5G coverage, ensuring seamless high-speed connectivity for both residents and visitors.
